Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
New research indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
